Installation issues

How do I know if I have the latest version of the emWave software?

When the emWave program is running, go to the Help menu, click and drag down to the "About emWave" item. You'll see the version number on the resultant screen. The latest version is 2.0.

How can people with small fingers use the finger sensor?

Insert a cotton ball or a small piece of foam between the Velcro finger sensor strap and the finger. You can turn the finger sensor around so that the cord is pointed toward you, so that the tip of the finger more easily reaches the sensor window.

Where do I register my software?

To register your emWave please enter your serial number, operating system and place of purchase in your HeartMath Store account .

Click here to go to the HeartMath Store.

I put the CD into the computer, and the installer screen doesn't appear.

Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. If the CD-ROM icon says "Audio CD", then you've inserted the music CD included with your emWave instead of the emWave software installation CD. Remove the music CD from the CD-ROM drive and insert the emWave installation CD. The installation program should start automatically.

If you have the emWave software installation CD in the CD-ROM drive and the installation doesn't automatically start then double-click on the CD-ROM icon in the "My Computer" window, then double-click on the Setup.exe icon. This will start the installer.

The installation program won't accept the serial number.

The serial number contains zeros, not the letter "O." Make sure your using the emWave serial number that starts with "FF" or "FF2" and not the serial number on the finger sensor. Also, be sure to and enter something in the name and company fields.

The connector on the emWave finger sensor doesn't match the serial port connector on my computer.

Some older PC serial ports (COM ports) have a DB25 connector. In this case, you will need a DB25 female - DB9 male adapter, which is available from most computer stores for a few dollars. If this is a second serial port, you may have to enable it at the BIOS level of your computer, otherwise you'll get a "Pulse sensor not found" message when you run the emWave program. Follow the instructions included with your hardware for changing BIOS settings. Your computer may not have a serial port - there is an external monitor connector on laptops that is the same size as the finger sensor connector, but which has 15 instead of 9 pins. If you don't have a serial port then may need to use the Belkin USB PDA adapter to connect the emWave finger sensor to the USB port.

How can I determine what serial ports are active on my computer?

To see the status of the serial ports, right-click on My Computer, and choose Properties from the menu. Click on the Device Driver tab of the System Properties window. Click on the Ports (COM & LPT) to see what COM ports exist. If a small yellow or red graphic is present on a COM port, a problem or conflict may exist that will have to be fixed before the emWave program can read data from the finger sensor.

My PC has a mouse connected to the serial port. What can I do?

You have a number of options. 1.) See if your PC has a small round port that you can connect a PS/2 mouse to. Substituting a PS/2 mouse for the serial mouse would free up the serial port for the finger sensor. 2.) Consider installing a serial/parallel port card, which would give you an additional serial port for the finger sensor. 3.) If your PC is running Windows 98 or Windows 2000, you could install a USB card, and either get a USB mouse, or a serial-USB adapter for the finger sensor (see the next question.)

My PC doesn't have a serial port. How can I connect the emWave?

You can use a serial to USB adapter if your computer has USB ports. We've tested the Belkin USB PDA Adapter, part number F5U109, retail price $30-$50. See http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=91042 for more information.
For a list of some U.S. resellers, go to http:/www.shopper.com and enter "F5U109" in the search window. For a directory of U.S. and international resellers, go to http://www.belkin.com/contactus/resellers.html (No other serial to USB adapters have been found to work.).

I'm using a USB-serial adapter to connect the finger sensor to my PC via a USB hub. I get a "Pulse sensor not found" message.

If the finger sensor is connected to a PC via a serial-USB adapter and a USB hub, the USB hub must be powered; otherwise the finger sensor doesn't get the power that it needs from the USB port. Try plugging the serial-USB adapter directly into the computer.

The message "Pulse sensor not found. Please make sure sensor is connected to the serial port on your computer." appears when you want to select one of the Training Modes.

Make sure that the sensor is plugged in the serial port on the back of your computer. Then select Exit from the File menu and restart the emWave software by double clicking on the emWave program icon on your desktop.

Try running the Sensor Test program. Quit the emWave program. Click on the Start button, then select Programs, then emWave, then Sensor Test. Click on the green arrow in the upper left-hand corner. You should see a brown pulse wave and a flatter heart rate line. Take note of the COM port shown in the lower-right corner of the screen.

If you have two serial ports, one with a serial port mouse and the other with the finger sensor - shut down and power off the computer. Switch the finger sensor and mouse connectors on the back of the computer. Restart the computer. Run the emWave to see if the finger sensor is found. Another approach would be to install a PS/2 mouse in place of the serial mouse, if your computer has a PS/2 mouse port on the back of the computer.

If you previously had a serial mouse connected to your computer, but no longer do, the serial mouse driver may still be installed. To check for this, right-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, select "Properties." Click on the Device Manager tab. Click on the "+" to the left of "Mouse." If you see a serial mouse device listed, and you are no longer using a serial mouse, right-click on the serial mouse name, and select "Remove". Close the window, reboot your computer, and run the emWave program to see if the finger sensor is now detected.

If you have software loaded that connects to external devices that connect via the serial port—like the Palm Pilot, a Windows CE device (see below), another computer (e. g., IntelliSync or LapLink) or devices like a digital camera or CrossPad (see below), you will need to disable the software that accesses these devices before starting the emWave software. Re-enable the software and reconnect the other device when you want to use the other device.

Another way to check to see what programs could be utilising the serial port is to look at the list of programs that automatically start when you boot your computer. Click on the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your desktop. Move the mouse to "Settings," then click on "Taskbar and Start Menu. " Click on the "Start Menu Programs" tab if necessary. Click on the "Advanced" button. Click on the "+" to the left of "Programs". Double-click on the "StartUp" item in the list. Examine the list to the right. See if any of the programs listed would utilise the serial port. If you no longer use any of these items, drag the icon to the desktop to remove it from the list. This way you can put the icon back if you need to. Later, you can put it in the Trash after you are certain you no long need it.

If you have an IBM ThinkPad 365XD, 560, and 760EL models, or a 755 and older models, see the http://www.palm.com/support/helpnotes/desktop/thinkpad.html Web page for details on how to configure your serial port.

Another way to test the finger sensor is to install the emWave software and finger sensor on another PC. If it works, there's probably an issue with your PC's configuration. If not, it could be an issue with the finger sensor (very rare.)

Call technical support if you still get a "Pulse sensor not found" message.

During installation I receive an error message saying that Windows was unable to find the file "Regsvr.exe".

Usually you will receive this error message because the "Regsvr.exe" file is either missing or corrupt. The "Regsvr32.exe" file registers .dll files as command components in the registry. If the "Regsvr32.exe" file is corrupt then the emWave will not install correctly resulting in missing shortcuts, crashing, non-responsiveness and missing HRV or pulse waves while recording.

1) To fix this problem first uninstall the emWave (if installed) and then restart your computer.
2) Download the correct version of the "Regsvr32.exe" file into the C:\WinNT\System32\ directory on Windows 2000 and XP systems, or into C:\Windows\System\ on Windows 95, 98, and ME systems.

For Windows XP download this file:
regsvr32.exe

For Windows ME download this file:
REGSVR32.EXE

For Windows 98 download this file:
REGSVR32.EXE

For Windows 95 download this file:
REGSVR32.EXE

3) Restart your computer.
4) Install the emWave and then restart your computer.

If you still have trouble using the emWave you may need to run Regfix.exe.

Installation - Palm Pilot and Other Device issues

I have a Palm Pilot that I connect to my serial port. Will there be a conflict with the emWave finger sensor?

To use the emWave, you first have to quit the Palm Pilot HotSync utility by right-clicking the HotSync icon in the Windows system tray (lower right corner of the desktop), and choosing "Exit." If this does not work, connect your Palm Pilot to the serial port and try again. If your Palm Pilot is not available, you can force the HotSynce program to quit - hit the control-alt-delete keys, select HotSync from the list of tasks, and click on the "End Task" button. In a few seconds, you'll probably see another window saying "Task not responding." Click on the "End Task" button. Now run the emWave program.

When you're done using the emWave and want to connect your Palm Pilot to your PC, disconnect the finger sensor from the serial port, reconnect the Palm Pilot to the serial port, and restart the HotSync utility--Start Menu, Programs, Palm Desktop, HotSync Manager. Note: Even though the Palm is connected to the USB port instead of the serial port, the HotSync Manager program still blocks the serial port, and must be exited before the emWave program will be able to find the finger sensor attached to the serial port.

I have a Windows CE computer that I connect to my serial port. Will there be a conflict with the emWave finger sensor?

Right-click on the icon in the system tray and uncheck the "Enable Serial Connection" as well as the "Enable Network Connection" items. The icon should change to indicating that the serial port is free and available for use by the emWave finger sensor. No communication with a handheld PC via serial cable will be possible until the "Enable Serial Connection" is rechecked.

I have a Compaq Armada laptop with an external CD-ROM attached, and I get the "Pulse sensor not found" message.

The Compaq Armada CD-ROM may conflict with the serial port. Shut down your laptop, detach the external CD-ROM, then power up your laptop.

I have a Crosspad that connects to my serial port. Will there be a conflict with the emWave finger sensor?

Locate the IBM Ink Transfer icon in the system tray. Right click on the icon and select the appropriate item in the list to disable the program.

Problems running the emWave

My mouse movement is very jerky when running the emWave.

This can happen because of a conflict with a serial mouse. Try using a PS/2 mouse instead of the serial mouse, if possible, or switch the mouse and finger sensor connectors on the back of the computer. Adjustments to the COM port settings may be necessary if the mouse and finger sensor are on COM1 and COM3, or COM2 and COM4. Call technical support if you need help.

When I start the emWave program, an hour glass appears, but the program never appears on screen.

The program is running, but you can't see it. Do a control-alt-delete, select "emWave", and click the "End Task" button. Perform a DirectX installation (described below.)

I run the emWave program and get an error message like "Fatal error 0E at 0028:C02A791A in VXD VCOMM(04) + 00000B7E."

This is due to a conflict with the Palm Pilot HotSync program or some other program that uses the serial port. See Palm Pilot item above on how to temporarily disable the HotSync program. PowerChute software for APC UPSs is known to cause this error. Unstall the PowerChute software via Control Panels, Add or Remove Programs. Run the emWave program. Download the latest PowerChute software from http://www.apc.com

When I run the emWave program, I get the error "The game.dll file is linked to missing export MFC42.DLL.

You installed the emWave software, and answered "no" when the installation program asked to overwrite ".DLL" files. Reinstall the emWave software. Answer "yes" to overwrite the ".DLL" files. Restart your computer. Run the emWave program.

When I try to run one of the games, I get an error message that says "DirectDraw Init Failed"

Perform a DirectX installation (described below.) If this does not solve the problem, use the Microsoft troubleshooting procedure at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q229/9/98.ASP to correct the problem.

When I run the Rainbow game, the emWave program crashes.

Download an updated game.dll file from our Updates and Downloads page.

The game graphics are distorted or the cursor disappears when running the games; or the message "A Required .dll file, dddraw. dll was not found." appears when you start the program, or your computer freezes when attempting to run a game.

You may need an updated video driver in order for the games to work. We urge you to back up your computer prior to installing any system software updates. Insert the emWave installation CD in the CD drive, while holding down the shift key. If the emWave software installation starts up, click the Cancel then Exit Setup buttons. You can access the installation CD via Windows Explorer, or go to "My Computer" on the Desktop, and right-click on your CD drive icon, and select Open from the list. (If you double-click you'll start the emWave installation program. Click the Cancel and Exit Setup buttons if this happens, and right-click on the CD icon.)

If you have version 1.1.3 or higher of the installation CD:

1. Open the Update folder on the installation CD, then the DXupdate folder, then double-click on Dx7aeng to run the DirectX installer.
2. Restart your computer and run the emWave program.

If you have version 1.1.2 or lower of the installation CD:

If you have a high-speed connection to the Internet, you can download and install DirectX 7.0a from: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=16819

or:

1. The installation CD contains a folder named "Directx." Double-click on the "Directx" folder.
2. Locate and double-click on the "Dxsetup.exe" icon.
3. Click on the "Reinstall DirectX" button.
4. Agree if asked to update a video driver.
5. Restart the computer and try the games again.
If this doesn't solve the problem then try the procedure described below.

I still have problems running the emWave - poor display quality, freezes, blank or black screen, etc.
-or-
The lines in the Heart Rate screen consist of faint dots

1. Exit the emWave software by selecting "Exit" from the file menu. (If the screen has gone black or blank and you cannot access the file menu. Press the "Ctrl" "Alt" and "Delete" keys on your keyboard simultaneously. Then highlight "emWave" and select "end task"). This will close the emWave program.
2. Right-click on the "My Computer" Icon on your desktop.
3. Select properties from the pop-up menu.
4. Click on the "Performance" tab.
5. Click on the "Graphics..." button.
6. Move the hardware acceleration slider to the left one or two notches, until the description underneath says "Basic accelerator functions:"
7. Click the "OK" button to close the Advanced Graphic Settings dialog box, then click "OK" to close the System Properties dialog box.
8. You will be prompted to restart your computer. Click "Yes" to restart.
9. After the computer restarts, try running the emWave software again.

If this doesn't work, repeat the above process and move the hardware acceleration slider all the way to the right. If this doesn't work, contact technical support.

NOTE: If you reduce the graphics acceleration, and the problem no longer occurs, you can generally leave your system on this setting. The Basic or None setting is more compatible than Full in most cases. However, for best performance, or if you have programs that require full acceleration, contact the manufacturer of your display adapter for updated drivers. Some high-performance games require full acceleration.

I switched the screen resolution on my laptop to 800 x 600, but the whole picture won't fit on the screen.

Some older laptops are limited to displaying 640 x 480 screen resolution. Consult with the laptop's manufacturer.

I have a laptop computer, and the games, such as the balloon game, do not fill the whole screen.

You may need to change the BIOS settings for graphics to "stretch" mode. Consult with a computer hardware specialist or call tech support if you are not experienced in making BIOS changes - an improper change to BIOS settings could disable your laptop.

The emWave program runs for about a minute and a half, then stops running.

Your computer may not have enough memory to run the emWave program properly. To check how much memory your computer has:

1. Right-click on the "My Computer" icon on your Desktop.
2. Select "System Properties" from the pop-up menu.
3. The amount of memory the computer has is shown towards the lower right-hand corner of the window. E.g. 32.0 MB RAM indicates 32 megabytes of memory. Computers with less than 32 megabytes of memory will generally not run the emWave program properly--the program will stop collecting data after a short time. Additional memory may be required if the computer has many programs running along with the emWave software.

If you change the default installation folder to a different location, you must not install the software in the root or top level of a hard drive, e.g., C:\ or D:\, but within a folder, e.g., C:\Program Files\Planetary\emWave or D:\FF. If you have done this, reinstall the software in a different location.

The emWave stops collecting data after about twenty minutes.

Go to the Edit menu, and select Options. Change Session Length from twenty to a higher number of minutes.

The text and icons on the Main Screen of the emWave program are out of place.

Change the resolution of your screen to 800 x 600. (See the answer to the next question.)

The Accumulated Entrainment Score and Entrainment Ratio Graphs don't show up at the bottom the Entrainment Ratios screen. I only see gray area where the graphs should be.

This can happen on some computers when the screen resolution is set at 640 x 480. Slide the mouse pointer arrow over the top of the bar that separates the top and bottom halves of the screen. When the mouse arrow changes to two horizontal lines with up and down vertical arrow click and hold down the left mouse button. Then slide the bar up about 1 / 4 inch. Release the mouse button. If the graphs still appear gray, move the bar up another 1 / 4 inch until the graphs appear.

Increasing the resolution of your screen to 800 x 600 pixels or greater will correct this problem:

1. Open the Display Control Panel by clicking the right mouse button on the desktop area.
2. Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
3. Click on the Settings tab.
4. Now move the desktop area slider to the left until "800 x 600" is displayed (if your monitor is capable of 800 x 600 resolution.) Click on "OK."

The heart rate graph is missing from the heart rate screen.

Click on the AutoCenter icon near the upper right corner of the screen to center the heart rate graph.

The program freezes, and I get an error message like "Program has performed an illegal operation." Click on the Details button and I see a message like "FF caused an invalid page fault in module FF. exe at 0137: 0040fbc5"

If during installation, you answered "NO" to overwriting a *.dll file, reinstall the emWave software, and answer "YES."

If this doesn't work, some Windows 95 or 98 modules need to be updated. We urge you to back up your computer prior to installing any system software updates. If your computer is on a corporate network, do not install any Windows updates without the express approval of your IT staff!

The easiest way to update Windows 95 computers that can connect to the Internet is to install Internet Explorer 5. The installer is in the Updates folder on the emWave installation CD. Insert the emWave installation CD in the CD drive.

Once Internet Explorer 5 is installed, connect to the Internet and go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Click on Product Updates. Choose to install all of the Critical Updates. Windows 98 users may want to install Internet Explorer 5 as well. Once Internet Explorer 5 is installed, Windows 98 users can log on to the Internet, then use the " Windows Update " feature on the Start Menu, which will start your Web browser, and take you to the Windows 98 update Web page. Choose to install all of the Critical Updates.

If the computer isn't connected to the Internet, install the updates appropriate for the operating system on your computer (Windows 95 or 98). To determine which operating system your computer has installed, right-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, and select "Properties" from the menu. The software installers are in the Updates folder on the emWave installation CD.

Restart after each installation.

Windows 95 updates:

--Windows 95 Service Pack 1--To see if you need this update, right-click on "My Computer" in the desktop, and select "Properties". If under System: it says "4.00.950" as opposed to "4.00.950 A" or "4.00.950. B", your system needs this update.
--Windows Library Update
--OLE 32 Update to Service Pack 1
--Updated Microsoft Java VM

Windows 98 updates:

--Microsoft Libraries Update
--Updated Microsoft VM

Windows NT updates:

--Service Pack 4

After installing the program, when I run the program, I get an error message that says "Incorrect version of DLL file (MSJET35.DLL) was found." (This also applies to any error messages that mention MSJET35.DLL)

If your computer is running Windows XP, download this file: msjet35.dll to your desktop. Double click on "My Computer", then "Local Disk (C:), then WINNT, then "Show the contents of this folder." Click on the system32 folder, then "Show the contents of this folder." Rename the existing msjet35.dll file to something like msjet35old.dll. Move the downloaded version of msjet35.dll into the C:\WINNT\system32 folder. Restart your computer. Run the emWave. See if this solves the problem. If not, delete the new msjet35.dll and rename msjet35old.dll to msjet35.dll.

For Windows 95, 98, and ME computers:

Insert the emWave installation CD in the CD drive. If the emWave software installation starts up, click the Cancel then Exit Setup buttons.
You can access the installation CD via Windows Explorer, or go to My Computer on the Desktop, and right-click on your CD drive icon, and select Open from the list. (If you double-click you'll start the emWave installation program. Click the Cancel and Exit Setup buttons if this happens, and right-click on the CD icon.)
1. The installation CD contains a folder named "Dao". Double click on the "Dao" folder, then double-click on the "Disk1" folder contained therein.
2. Double-click on the "Setup" icon that shows a little computer.
3. When the installation wizard comes up, click "Next" button.
4. In the next dialog box make sure that JET 3.5 is checked and ODBCDirect is not checked and click "Next".
5. Uncheck all options in the next dialog box and click "Next".
6. Click "OK" in the message box.
7. Restart the computer and run the emWave program. If you still encounter problems, try installing the emWave software, restart, and run the program again.

If during the installation, you get an error message saying "another application is using DOA files", make sure that you have exited all programs.

Problems with results

When I run one of the Training Modes, either the heart rhythm waveform on the heart rhythm screen jumps to the top and bottom of the screen, or nothing happens in one of the three games.

The data shown on the heart rhythm screen is very choppy, with lots of red segments.

Review the "Record and View Accurate Data" section of the manual. Here's a more detailed description of what to try.

To get consistently good data from the finger sensor, begin with the pulse wave view on the heart rhythm coherence skill building screen when you start an HRV recording session.

From the main menu, click on the heart rhythm coherence skill building screen icon. Click on the fourth icon from the left at the top of the screen which displays "pulse wave" when you move the cursor over it. (See section 5.4.4 in the manual.) This will split the screen in two, with heart rate in the top graph, and the pulse wave in the bottom graph.

Insert the finger into the finger sensor.

Make sure that the finger tip is over the small rectangle in the finger sensor - if the finger joint is over this rectangle or the tip of the finger is too far back, data quality will be diminished.

Adjust the strap to be comfortably snug. Too tight or too loose will affect data quality - you can get a sense for the proper pressure by starting to collect data with the pulse wave displayed, then pressing down and lifting the finger in the sensor to see what happens to the pulse wave - it will flatten out when there's too much or too little pressure.

Your hand and finger in the sensor should be on a hard, flat surface to minimise movement, which can result in red-line artifacts in the HRV graph. The hand should be in a relaxed position.

If your hands are cold, reduced circulation may interfere with recording an accurate pulse signal and affect the data collection process. Rub your hands together rapidly to warm them up and check the shape of the pulse wave in the heart rhythm recording mode.

Click on the "Start" icon, and observe the pulse wave - it should consist of successive rounded peaks. See the pulse wave pictured in sections 5.1 and 5.4.4 of the manual. Each person's pulse wave will be somewhat different.

When you have good pulse wave, stop the data collection by clicking on the "stop" icon. Click on the second icon from the left to start collecting data again.

There's a remote possibility that the finger sensor is defective, but the techniques described above should enable you to get good HRV data.

Make sure the Finger Sensor test program is not running at the same time the emWave program is running.

No matter what I do, I always get the same results.

The emWave program may be set to "Simulator" mode - see section 8.2 of the manual for details.

How can I make it more difficult to reach high entrainment scores?

The emWave software is set to the "Default.par" settings file by default but comes with an optional "Advanced.par" settings file located in "C:\Program Files\Planetary\emWave\".

Too set your emWave to use the "Advanced.par" settings file follow the instructions in section 9.0 of you manual.

If you have used the "Advanced.par" settings and but would still like to make it more difficult to reach high entrainment scores follow the instructions below.

1) Exit the emWave if you have it open.
2) Download the file MoreAdvanced.par into the directory "C:\Program Files\Planetary\emWave\" (You may need to right-click to save as target or link on your desktop)
3) Open the emWave.
4) Under the "Edit" menu select "Edit Parameters".
5) Click the button labeled " ... " to the right of the "File Name" input box.
6) In the browse window you should see the 3 files titled "Advanced.par", "Default.par" and "MoreAdvanced.par".
7) Double click the file "MoreAdvanced.par" or select "MoreAdvanced.par" and click "Open".
8) Now exit the emWave.
Your setting should now be set to the "MoreAdvanced.par" settings file. If you do not notice a difference in reaching high entrainment scores go back to the "Edit" menu and select "Edit Parameters" and make sure the emWave is set to "MoreAdvanced.par".

How can I make it easier to reach high entrainment scores?

Follow the instructions below to set lower parameters in the emWave.

1) Exit the emWave if you have it open.
2) Download the file Low.par into the directory "C:\Program Files\Planetary\emWave\" (You may need to right-click to save as target or link on your desktop)
3) Open the emWave.
4) Under the "Edit" menu select "Edit Parameters".
5) Click the button labeled " ... " to the right of the "File Name" input box.
6) In the browse window you should see the 3 files titled "Advanced.par", "Default.par" and "Low.par".
7) Double click the file "Low.par" or select "Low.par" and click "Open".
8) Now exit the emWave.
Your setting should now be set to the "Low.par" settings file. If you do not notice a difference in reaching high entrainment scores go back to the "Edit" menu and select "Edit Parameters" and make sure the emWave is set to "Low.par".

Printing problems

Reports that I print from the emWave program aren't correct - they have missing graphics, colours, etc.

If you have an HP DeskJet or OfficeJet printer, try installing the DeskJet 550C printer driver. Insert your Windows installation CD into the CD-ROM drive.

1. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your Desktop.
2. Double-click on the "Printers" folder.
3. Double-click on the "Add Printer" icon.
4. Follow the steps - select "local printer", "HP" from the manufacturers list, and "HP DeskJet 550C" from the printer list. Available ports is most likely "LPT1:". Printer name - leave as is. Default printer - No. Print a test page - yes.

Start the emWave program. When you are ready to print, go to the File Menu, Print Setup, and select "HP DeskJet 550C" from the list of available printers, then print the report.

Hewlett-Packard technical support may be able to suggest a different printer driver if this doesn't help. An updated printer driver may be available from http://www.hp.com

Another option is to have the emWave report on-screen, then press the "Print Screen" button. This will copy the screen contents to the clipboard. Open a word processing program, and paste (control-V) the screen image into the blank document. Print.

Reports that I print from the emWave program have incorrect dates.

Download and install the latest version of the program from our Updates and Downloads page.

Deinstalling the emWave software.

How do I deinstall the emWave program?

Click on the Start button, then select Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Select emWave, then click on the Add/Remove button.

NOTE: If you are deinstalling the emWave program and would like to save your session data. You must move or copy the "Ff.mbd" file located in the emWave folder (The default location is C:\ Program Files \ Planetary \ FreezeFramer.)

Moving the emWave software.

I want to move the emWave software to another computer. How do I transfer the session data that I've already collected?

Your session data is contained in the "Ff.mbd" file in the emWave folder (The default location is C:\ Program Files \ Planetary \ FreezeFramer.) Copy this file to a floppy disk. After you install the emWave software on the new computer, copy the file from the floppy to the emWave folder on the new computer, replacing the existing copy of the file. Run the emWave program on the new computer and check to make sure that the session data is present.

If the Ff.mdb file is too large to fit on a floppy, you could use the shareware WinZip program to compress the file. See http://www.winzip.com for details.

How do I back up my session data?

Your session data is contained in the "Ff.mbd" file in the emWave folder (The default location is C:\ Program Files \ Planetary \ FreezeFramer.) Make a copy of this file in another location of your hard drive, or back up to removable media like a floppy disk or Zip drive.

Floppy disk installation

My computer doesn't have a CD-ROM drive. How can I install the emWave software on it?

You'll need a computer with a CD-ROM drive in order to make a set of emWave software installation diskettes. You could also use products like LapLink http://www.laplink.com/ or Intellisync http://www.pumatech.com/Intellisync_Notebooks.html which would allow you to access the CD-ROM drive on another computer.

Procedure to create emWave installation diskettes:

1. Insert the emWave installation CD into the CD-ROM drive. Hold down the shift key as the CD enters the computer. This will prevent the installation program from starting up. If the installation program starts anyway, click on the "Cancel" and "Exit Setup" buttons.

2. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. Right-click on the icon for your CD-ROM drive. Drag down to "Open" on the menu.

3. Double-click on the "FF FLOPPY" folder. You'll see six folders - disk1, disk2, etc. Double-click on the "disk1" folder.

4. Insert a blank floppy diskette labeled "Disk 1" into your floppy disk drive.

5. Make sure that the "disk1" window is on top, and that you can see the "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)" icon. Do a "control-A" to select all the files in the "disk1" window. All of the files in the "disk1" window will darken.

6. Drag one of the selected files to the "3 1/2 Floppy (A:)" icon. The files will start copying to the diskette.

7. Close the "disk1" window. Eject the floppy diskette.

8 . Insert another blank floppy disk labeled "Disk 2". Repeat steps 5-7 for the other folders - disk2, disk3, etc.

9. When done copying the files in all six folder to six blank diskettes, take the diskettes to the PC where emWave will be installed.

10. Insert the diskette labeled "Disk 1" into the PC's floppy disk drive.

11. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. Double-click on the floppy disk icon (A:).

12. Double-click on the Setup or Setup.exe icon, which shows the picture of a small computer.

13. Follow the installation instructions.

14. After the installation is complete, restart the computer. Attach the Freeze-Frame finger sensor to the serial port.

15. Run the emWave software.
